Vinona Burela
Abstract
This research paper deals with the connection between student employment and academic attainment with the aim of determining the relationship between the amount of time students spend on their jobs and its relation to the students’ field of study, to grade point average, payment of ECTS points and/or tuition fees, and regularity in fulfilling academic obligations. The theoretical framework of this research consists of two conflicting theories: the zero-sum theory, which emphasizes the negative aspects of extracurricular activities, and the developmental theory, which emphasizes its positive aspects.
The research was conducted using the survey method on a convenient sample of students at the University of Zagreb as part of the Survey Method course at the undergraduate study of the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of University of Zagreb. In accordance with the zero-sum theory, it has been shown that working alongside studying results in academic losses. In particular, it has been shown that the payment of tuition is related to the amount of time spent on student employment. Additionally, the relationship between the amount of work and the regularity of performing academic obligations is close to statistical significance.
Given the fact that the number of Croatian students who work alongside their studies is increasing, and research on the connection between student work and academic success in Croatia has not been conducted to date, the above results are of extreme importance and can help the staff of the Office for Students of the University of Zagreb in providing support to students so that they can fulfill their academic obligations.
