Reconstruction of the Wooden Roof of the Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Pokupsko

Abstract
After the earthquakes that hit Croatia in 2020, the church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the town of Pokupsko was badly damaged. Particularly bad damage of the church was visible in a form of wide cracks and deformations of the large dome. These were caused by spacing out of longitudinal bearing planes on wall tops and inclinations of lateral longitudinal walls outwards.
The preliminary examination after the earthquake, and the detailed investigation of the wood structure established that the roof wood structure participates in a load-bearing concept of the dome. As a consequence, part of the global deformations also caused the damage on the roof structure. Except this rare, „symbiotic“ statics of the wood structure and the stone-built dome, the investigations also revealed the significant biological deterioration of the wood material on and near the bearings, therefore the structural reconstruction of the church comprised a complex, simultaneous structural reconstruction of the church walls and the roof structure.
The article brings chronological survey of all the activities in preparation of the repair, from mapping of the actual condition of the roof, to the whole set of assessment and testing steps on wood elements, calculation analyses, design of the repair and reinforcement solutions, to specifics of execution of particular measures. Bearing in mind the complexity of the work, but also the responsibility in approach to the reconstructions, it may be concluded that the reconstruction of the historical wood roof of the Parish church in Pokupsko presents one of the most outstanding projects. We sincerely hope that the exquisite engineering tasks employed in this case will serve as a standard in future capital restorations and repair of historic wood structures.
