Abstract

This paper analyses linguistic errors in written assignments (essays, compositions, school tasks) produced by high school students in Croatian language classes. It aims to identify the most common mistakes found in these written works. Writing is a linguistic activity practiced using various language sources and is closely connected to other language skills such as reading, speaking, and listening, forming an inseparable part of them. The purpose of developing linguistic skills is to achieve higher levels of literacy. Numerous studies have shown a direct correlation between academic success and proficiency in all language skills, particularly speaking and writing. Since these are skills, language activities must be practiced and refined throughout life, serving as the foundation for lifelong learning. The study highlights linguistic errors—spelling, morphological, syntactic, word formation, stylistic, and lexical—identified in written assignments from a total of 250 students (grades 1 to 4) in Elektrotehnička i ekonomska škola Nova Gradiška during the 2023/2024 school year.
