Abstract

The paper analyzes, based on individual entries in contemporary normative textbooks
(School Dictionary of the Croatian Language, Croatian Orthography, Croatian Professional
Terminology, Croatian Online Dictionary), their definitions and normative references.
Sometimes inconsistency, disorder and illogicality are evident in the description of individual
principles of the normative hierarchy of recommended and permitted versions. It is proposed not to describe and publish contemporary normative manuals using the method of
constant advice and comparison of one’s own language with related ones, but to start from
the current linguistic situation of normative development in the 21st century, according to
the norms, rules and laws of the Croatian language itself. Language is one of the properties
and characteristics of the distinctiveness of state sovereignty.
