Sažetak
The article explores the theological presuppositions and translator competencies necessary in the translation of the Holy Scripture as the Word of God. At the heart of the study lies the question: how can the Bible be translated as the Word of God, a living, effective, and salvific message, addressed to contemporary humanity? Starting from the interconnectedness of text, author, and reader, the author argues that biblical translation adds a new layer to this structure, assuming the role of the original text for readers unfamiliar with biblical languages. The first part presents a theologicallinguistic of Croatian Bible translations of the New Testament, based on selected texts, highlighting the differences arising from linguistic, communication and theological choices. It becomes evident that translation decisions determine both the style and clarity, as well as theological message and the way the contemporary reader receives the Word of God. This reveals a close link between exegetical interpretation, sensitivity to the receptor language, and the capacity to mediate the Word in its effective and lived dimension. The third part outlines the fundamental competencies of the biblical translator: knowledge of the original languages and their contexts, proficiency in the target language, communication sensitivity, and above all, spiritual maturity and a personal relationship with God. Translation is thus not merely a technical or philological task, but a process of faithful mediation within the community to which the Word is addressed. In conclusion, the translation of the Holy Scripture is not merely a transfer from one language to another, but from text to life. In this process, the translator becomes a mediator of the message of salvation – called to accuracy, clarity, fidelity, and awareness of the limits of their own understanding – so that the Word of God may speak to the contemporary reader.
