Abstract

The materials from the ethnological campaign “Research and Determination of the Condition of Ethnological Monuments with the Aim of Gathering Information and Studying Possible Methods for Their Protection in the Territory of SR Croatia” were collected through systematic professional field research on the material culture of rural communities. Fieldwork consisted of interviews with informants, recording data necessary to complete the professional questionnaire, and documenting photographic and architectural materials. In addition to providing insight into the state of preservation or endangerment of heritage, and the possibilities for its reconstruction and protection, the collected materials also served as the basis for scientific studies and thematic research on traditional construction and housing, primary industries and economies, various inventories, handcrafts and clothing culture. The gathered materials were classified by municipality, as shown in the table of the settlement survey, which included the year in which the surveys were conducted, the competent institutions that carried them out, and the research areas (municipalities), along with the number of surveyed villages and their listing under the corresponding ordinal number in the notes.
The example of material processing is based on the documentation created following the first ethnological campaign, which took place from August 21 to September 6, 1972, in the territory of the municipality of Velika Gorica. The team consisted of nine members, who surveyed 24 villages, registering 2,227 movable objects and 251 immovable objects. They conducted architectural recordings of 95 objects and took 1,279 photographs. The examples determine the time period characterized by the existence of values that provide the possibility for reconstruction using selected methodologies as sources for the economic and cultural history of rural communities.
