Sažetak
Exoskeletons are devices that can support the muscle and skeletal system relying on a variety of mechanical principles. In view of the muscle and skeletal disorders, exoskeletons may reduce muscular stress in the affected body parts, e.g. lower back or shoulders. So far, several types of exoskeletons have been developed and used in a variety of ways. Exoskeletons may be used to facilitate recovery during rehabilitation by helping to maintain balance and improve mobility, in military activities for improving the arms handling skills and to increase endurance in long marches, during training for the muscle strength improvement and during gym training.
In the past few years, exoskeletons have also found application in the work environment where they help workers to reduce static dynamic loads thus reducing fatigue, exhaustion and, consequently, the chance of injury. The uses of professional exoskeletons are wide, as they help in a great number of human activities, including agriculture, automobile industry, logistics and storage, health care, construction industry, and many others. Although the potential benefits from exoskeletons in preventing muscle and skeletal disorders may be significant, it needs to be investigated whether the use of such auxiliary devices may raise new issues relating to safety and health at work. Long-term effects of using exoskeletons are still under investigation. Therefore, it is of great importance to assess thoroughly the hazards and risks at the workplaces where exoskeletons are used.
