Sažetak
The authors retrace the stages of formation and evolution of the Rovinj Municipal Fire
Brigade from 1854 to 1918. A detailed study of mostly archival sources preceded
an analysis of the political and social conditions that allowed the establishment
of the first specialised firefighting unit in 1854, focusing on various aspects that
characterized its activity. In addition to examining the technical aspects and use of
characteristic firefighting equipment, the research focuses on the social implications
of the beginning of this new, qualified emergency service for the local community as
well as for the response capabilities in the event of a fire or another natural disaster.
The paper also explores the relationship between the local government and the Fire
Brigade and evaluates the ability of Rovinj’s authorities to provide the necessary
support for a regular and efficient work of the Fire Brigade. Finally, all of this is aimed
at demonstrating that the gradual stabilization and partial professionalization of the
Fire Brigade on the eve of the First World War represented an important element in
the modernisation process at the local level, reflecting the social and technological
transformations already underway in a wider global context.
