Abstract
In recent years, smart cities have become a global phenomenon with different forms appearing in different parts of the world. A smart city is defined as a metropolitan area that, through the application of modern technology, enables a higher quality of life for its inhabitants. Its main goal is to improve urban life by using information technology in terms of traffic, security, energy, waste and even health services. The purpose of the paper is to investigate how smart cities work and how they get data. The aim of the paper is to investigate how citizens understand the benefits of smart cities and the advantages of digital technologies.
This research is based on a qualitative and descriptive methodology, with a focus on secondary data analysis. The approach includes a review of relevant scientific and professional literature, strategic documents of the European Union, national development strategies and publicly available reports related to the development of smart cities. The main sources of data include EU policy documents, academic articles, institutional reports and verified online platforms. The results showed that the combination of digital technologies with urban infrastructure has increased the degree of dependence of smart cities on huge amounts of data collected from citizens, sensors and other digital systems. The work enabled the presentation of all the challenges and perspectives of smart city development, describing the challenges of data security and privacy protection, social challenges and digital inclusion, and future technologies in the development of smart cities.
