Sažetak
Since 2015, at the Research Centre for the Humanities (RCH) in Budapest, we have been developing a unique database of national statistics produced between 1720 and 1910 through a series of state-funded projects. These sources, preserved in archival collections or published by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), amount to approximately nine million individual data entries, covering some 13,000 settlements and several hundred variables. The database is publicly accessible at www.gistory.hu, and its cartographic visualizations are available via the online server at http://gistahungarorum.abtk.hu.
During our work, we identified a considerable body of data collected and published by Hungarian state authorities relating to Croatia and Slavonia. Among these were census data from 1900 to 1910, which have been visualized in the form of a digital atlas. This in turn motivated us to undertake the digital processing of urbarium data on settlements from 1786 and 1828, subsequently integrated into the database to expand its spatial coverage (HUNRENtech project). This integration made it possible to:
1. compare the situation in Civil Croatia and Slavonia at the end of the 18th and 19th centuries,
2. examine their internal diversity, and
3. compare these findings with patterns in other parts of the Kingdom of Hungary, made feasible by the compatible data structure.
The present study addresses the latter two questions through statistical evaluation and visualization of the urbarium summaries of 1786 that were collected by the Hungarian Court Chancellery. Our analysis demonstrates that standard deviation frequently exceeded mean values, indicating a high level of internal variation within counties, and that the distribution of phenomena did not always align with the county-level administrative structures of Civil Croatia and Slavonia, which was rahter differentiated regarding patterns of landuse, society, etc.
