Abstract

First official school memorials were written from 1880, when every school was ordered to keep Memorial and record „major” school events. School Memorials are divided in two parts: the history of school and school chronicle for every school year. In the first part teachers recorded the history of the school since the day it was founded. In the second part they recorded the school chronicle. School Memorial is some kind of official school diary. School Memorial describes school life in many of its segments: school rituals connected to different religious and political events, transfer of teachers, number of students, illnesses among students, theatre and musical performances by school children, students work in school gardens, conditions of the classrooms and buildings, the number of books in school library, etc. The School Memorial is useful source for history of school practices, history of everyday life, culture history, social history and history of childhood. The paper gives a brief overview of the history of education in the area of the city of Valpovo based on preserved school memorials from the 19th century. The author is analysing school memorials from the schools in Valpovo, Harkanovci, Ladimirevci and Ivanovci.
