Abstract

The paper explores the celebration of 1000 years of the Croatian kingdom held in Osijek on September 5 and 6, 1925. After an introductory section on the circumstances of the celebration of 1000 years of the Croatian kingdom at the national level, based on archival and newspaper sources, primarily the newspaper Hrvatski list, the course of preparations for the celebration, as well as the celebration itself, is reconstructed. The first ideas about the Osijek celebration emerged in March 1925, and in July a Committee for the celebration of 1000 years of the Croatian kingdom was established. The celebration itself was divided into two days. The city of Osijek was richly decorated, and ceremonial parades, cultural events, live music, and outdoor performances were organized. In memory of the celebration, a memorial linden tree was planted in the newly renamed King Tomislav Park. The people of Osijek attended the celebration in large numbers, and it primarily served to foster a sense of national pride and express Croatian distinctiveness within the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes.
