Abstract

In the paper, the author relies on two “initial” questions that need to be answered in order to more clearly indicate the horizon of shaping the language policy of the Croatian Language Council. The first question is: How to speak Croatian? The author suggests that valid answers should be sought in a “triangle” consisting of: (i) a critical assessment of the tradition of Croatian philological school of the followers of V. S. Karadžić; (ii) strengthening the creative abilities of the Croatian language; (iii) refuting the mechanical and parasitic transfer of parts of other languages into Croatian. In line with these intentions, the Council is advised to cooperate and coordinate its activities with several existing institutions. The second question is: With whom to speak Croatian? The author suggests that answers to this question should be sought in continuous activities aimed at increasing the number of speakers of the Croatian language. In doing so, the practical priorities are (i) strengthening the language proofreading service; (ii) improvements in learning Croatian; (iii) work on useful manuals; (iv) recommendations on language intentions in the public space. In achieving these priorities, the Council is again advised to cooperate and coordinate its activities with several existing institutions.
