The Sensory World Through Latin-romani Equivalents in Petar Stanković’s Sixteen-language Dictionary

Abstract
Petar Stanković’s sedecimal-lingual dictionary is an annex to his
treatise Idee primitive dell’Uomo in istato di natura presso tutti i popoli del
mondo per conoscere i rapporti delle lingue e loro origine from 1830, which
is preserved in manuscript form in the University Library in Pula under the
signature 5 STANC ide, inventory no. X 147 (Stanković, Rukopisi, box VII.,
M.P. 462). This paper examines the fundamental concepts and Stanković’s
idee primitive, from primary assumption that their conception and choice
of terms offer a certain image of sensory reality derived empirically from
a perception of the world and life. Latin-Romani parallels are presented,
along with accompanying parallels in Italian (the language of Stanković’s
education), and in the Croatian dialect of his native region. By positioning
the Romani language in a comparative relationship with Latin, as a vantage
point, and the fourteen other languages represented in his dictionary,
Stanković determined it as a philologically significant object of scientific
study, which placed him in the ranks of the leading European philologists
of his time. It has been shown that the source of his dictionary was the
living speech of the Roma people, which he recorded in his glossostatistics,
which he added to the discussion. His work therefore represents a living
testimony of the Romani language from 1830, a kind of unicum in our
region and a rare case even beyond its borders.
