Sažetak

In this article I try to show how the imminent question of a joint army of the‎ European Union would be answered by Immanuel Kant, one of its “spiritual‎ forefathers”. I consider Kant’s views on the peacebuilding role of supranational ‎entities, the moral permissibility of warfare, and the legal procedures ‎for starting wars, and link them with the current European situation to produce ‎an affirmative answer to the issue of a possible European army. I claim‎ that the European Union is, from a Kantian perspective, the nearest thing to a ‎peace-enabling supranational entity, and thus provides a moral foundation for ‎a joint military. Considering that the current European situation is not promising, ‎such forces would constitute one of the pillars for a sustainable European ‎project. I envisage as the main challenge the need to construct deliberative ‎procedures that would make decision-making truly legitimate (on the European ‎scale), while also being operable.‎
