Sažetak

Introduction: The nursing profession is increasingly challenged by rising patient numbers, staff shortages, technological advancements, and emotional demands, all of which significantly affect the well-being of nurses. In addition to clinical expertise, nurses are expected to demonstrate emotional intelligence, reflexivity, and stress resilience. The aim of this narrative review was to analyze the concept of personal mastery in nursing, with a particular focus on its contribution to reflective practice, resilience, and the preservation of professional identity.
Methods: A narrative literature review was conducted in PubMed, Medline, CINAHL, and Scopus databases. Peer-reviewed articles published between 2009 and 2025, available in full text in English or Croatian, addressing personal mastery in nursing practice, were included.
Results and Discussion: A total of 38 studies employing various research designs were included. The most consistent findings confirm that personal mastery contributes to the development of emotional intelligence, resilience, reflective practice, professional identity, and leadership skills. Emotional intelligence and resilience were shown to reduce stress and burnout, reflective practice strengthened professional knowledge, while mentorship and continuing professional development ensured long-term growth.
Conclusion: Personal mastery is a key competency in the nursing profession, enabling balance between personal and professional development, enhancing resilience, and strengthening professional identity. Systematic institutional support for the development of personal mastery is essential to ensure the quality of care and the well-being of nurses.
