Abstract

Informatics, or Computer Science, has been present in the Croatian education
system since the 1970s—whether as a compulsory or elective subject,
as part of another school subject, or as a different form of computer-related
activities in primary schools. This paper analyzes its status, curriculum content,
and the required professional qualifications for the position of Computer
Science teachers from the early 1970s to 2020. A qualitative analysis of
primary sources was conducted, including all key educational documents,
primary school curricula and syllabi in Informatics, as well as regulations concerning
teachers’ professional qualifications. This comparative study examines
whether, during the observed period, educational authorities recognized
in a timely manner the importance of preparing new generations of students
for life in the digital age. It also describes the historical context of introducing
computers into Croatian primary schools, as well as the etymological meaning
of the term informatics.
