The etymological entry in (e-)lexicographic editions: the case of italian loanwords

In lexicographic editions, entries provide various types of information about the lemma: grammatical, terminological, etymological, normative, and stylistic. The etymological entry provides information on the language from which the word originates and on the intermediary language. The article analyzes the manner in which etymological treatment is approached in lexicographic editions that are not primarily etymological; it also analyzes and compares the etymological treatment of Italian loanwords (Italianisms) in online lexicographic editions as well as in printed ones. As the etymological entry is the sole and most extensive linguistic piece of information in the encyclopedia, and given that etymological information in explanatory (linguistic) dictionaries and encyclopedias is not obligatory, the ways in which etymologies are presented in linguistic dictionaries and in the online encyclopedia are compared. The sources include monolingual dictionaries of the Croatian language and online lexicographic editions—the online edition of the Croatian Encyclopedia of the Miroslav Krleža Institute of Lexicography (LZMK) and the developing online project Croatian Web Dictionary – Mrežnik (A–K) of the Institute of the Croatian Language (IHJ). By analyzing and comparing etymological information accompanying Italian loanwords in printed and online editions, as well as in encyclopedic and linguistic ones, specific features as well as similarities and differences are presented.
