Sažetak

The Confraternity of Blacksmiths in Zadar is considered one of the oldest among the many confraternities that existed in the city. It attracted scholarly attention as early as the 19th century and has been mentioned in numerous scholarly studies, where it was regularly associated with the no longer extant church of St John de Pusterla in today’s Varoš district of Zadar. The name de Pusterla derives from a small medieval city gate once existing in the mantle of southwestern city walls. The church was also referred to as St John the Baptist, St John the Blacksmith (San Giovanni Fabbri), and St Dominica (popularly Nediljica) due to the high concentration of blacksmiths’ workshops and houses in the area around the church, as well as because of an icon of the Virgin transferred to the church in the 16th century from the church of St Dominica located outside the city walls – after which the confraternity was named fraternitas sancte Dominice fabrorum de Iadra. The 13th century icon of the Virgin, today part of the Samuel H. Kress Collection in the El Paso Museum of Art, Texas, has been studied by Ivo Petricioli, who attributed its execution to the Adriatic-Byzantine school of painting. In the 1530s, the confraternity moved to the church of St John the Baptist, as St Dominica outside the city walls was demolished on Venetian orders due to the Ottoman threat. By analysing original archival material alongside previously published research on the confraternity of Zadar’s blacksmiths, this paper demonstrates that its original seat was indeed the church of St Dominica outside the city walls, offering a new interpretation of the icon’s transfer and the confraternity’s relocation to the city – thereby complementing the existing knowledge about this institution, whose roots can be securely traced back to the early 15th century.
