Abstract
During the very turbulent linguistic period of the second half of the nineteenth century, the Handbook for Midwifery with the Dictionary of Artistic Terms and Folk Phrases (1875) was published by Ante Kuzmanić, a respected physician, politician, editor, and philologist, one of the dominant
representatives of the Zadar philological circle. The aim of the work is to describe the language used in his handbook through a comprehensive graphic, orthographic, and linguistic analysis (phonological, morphological, and syntactic) and thus contribute to linguistic and historical research.
By reconstructing and describing the language system that Kuzmanić uses in his Handbook, we gain a better insight into the linguistic trends in the Kingdom of Dalmatia and determine which linguistic solutions Kuzmanić favoured and how much the language of the studied corpus differed
from the norm of the second half of the nineteenth century.
