Sažetak
During archaeological excavations of the Old Town in Konjščina and the Old Town in Donja Stubica, three rectangular tablets of diminutive dimensions were found. The engraved sundial lines on their surfaces, combined with the size of the tablets, suggest that they are components of diptych dials. In their original form, these objects were equipped with a compass and functioned as portable instruments suitable for travel, enabling individual timekeeping with relatively accurate readings at various locations. Based on the stamped years of manufacture, the diptych dials from Hrvatsko Zagorje date to the 16th century. Their functional, design, and stylistic features indicate that they were produced in the workshops of Nuremberg, the principal European centre for diptych dial manufacture at that time. This paper aims to gain new insights into the provenance of the discovered tablets through typological and stylistic analysis, and by comparing them with diptych dials from other archaeological sites and museum collections both within and outside Croatia. Specifi cally, the paper seeks to determine the place of origin, the specific workshops, and, to the extent possible, the craftsmen who created them.
