Abstract

With the application of modern technologies in archaeology, we now possess various tools capable of enhancing and accelerating research. The high-quality processing of available data has turned tools, databases, and repositories into indispensable resources for gathering facts and literature. We present an example of such a database, demonstrated through a search for villae rusticae on the island of Korčula. Villae rusticae were undoubtedly the dominant settlement form on the Adriatic islands from the very beginning of the Roman occupation of the Adriatic region until Late Antiquity. The dynamics of construction, expansion, remodelling, and the Late Antique transformation of these villas are evident throughout the Adriatic area. Previous, predominantly topographic research of Korčula by numerous experts and scientists, along with systematic and rescue archaeological excavations, has enabled the collection of a significant amount of data. This data, along with other numerous records and a significant, extensive bibliography, has been aggregated in the DATABASE of Ancient Sites of the Republic of Croatia (BAZA). By running various queries in the BAZA search engine, it is possible to access diverse data that can serve as a foundation for researching the topic of villae rusticae and the state of research on Korčula, as well as to compile a unified bibliography for this subject, the importance of which transcends the local context. Through this example, we demonstrate how gathering facts and relevant literature within such a tool can provide the groundwork for new research.
