The Manuscript Correspondence Between Đuro Ferić and Maksimilijan Vrhovac and His Paraphrasis Psalmorum Poetica (1791)

The Dubrovnik Latinist Đuro Ferić (1739–1820) made his first appearance in literature with his work Paraphrasis psalmorum poetica, published in Dubrovnik in 1791. In this work, following Horace’s Latin metrical schemes, he produced a poetic paraphrase of the Psalms, dedicating it to Maksimilijan Vrhovac, Bishop of Zagreb, in the fourth year of his episcopal service. Ferić regarded Vrhovac as a patron of northern Croatia and hoped not only for his support of the work but also for his recommendation among the Zagreb clergy. The publication of the Paraphrasis was preceded by correspondence between Ferić and Vrhovac, preserved in the Archdiocesan Archives in Zagreb, where four of Ferić’s letters from 1791 to 1793 are kept. These letters reveal that the printing of the work was delayed and that its distribution did not proceed according to plan. In the preface to the reader of the Paraphrasis, Ferić interpolates two letters confirming that, at the urging of Benedikt Stay, he composed the Psalms in various Horatian metrical schemes to make the work more engaging. In the margins, Ferić includes the basic psalm text according to the Vulgate, while the central part contains his paraphrase, which is generally longer than the original. In order to meet the requirements of Roman prosody and metrics, Ferić employed various stylistic figures and established himself as a skillful paraphrast, weaving numerous motifs from Roman literature into his work. Although the Paraphrasis did not achieve the expected popularity in northern Croatia, it has remained an important literary monument to the attempt at the synchronic homogenization of the Croatian lands.
