Sažetak
During the Homeland War in the Republic of Croatia, significant damage was inflicted upon cultural heritage. A total of 2,423 immovable cultural monuments were damaged, of which 495 were sacred structures. The most affected were buildings located in the occupied territories. Following the onset of open aggression against Croatia, the Yugoslav People’s Army and the military forces of the rebel Serbs deliberately destroyed cultural monuments. Almost all sacred structures of the Roman Catholic Church in the areas that were occupied were either damaged or destroyed. However, sacred heritage sites of the Serbian Orthodox Church were also affected. Since the summer of 1990, incidents began occurring in parts of the County geographically belonging to Western Slavonia, instigated by the Serbian Democratic Party. In March 1991, an armed conflict broke out in the area of Western Slavonia between rebel Serbs and the Croatian special police forces. Following the attacks by Serbian rebels on towns and municipalities in Western Slavonia, the increasingly frequent clashes escalated into open war in August 1991. Rebel Serbs occupied parts of the former Grubišno Polje and Daruvar municipalities, and certain towns were subjected to constant attacks by the YPA. In the liberation operations of the Croatian Army in the autumn and winter of 1991, the occupied parts of these municipalities were freed. During the war, a total of 32 immovable cultural monuments were damaged in the County, including ten out of the total 63 sacred heritage sites of the Serbian Orthodox Church. All ten structures were cultural monuments. Almost all damaged Serbian Orthodox Church structures in the County were located in areas exposed to intense armed conflict and were destroyed during the war.
