Abstract

Behavioral addictions or addictions to behavior represent a relatively new concept and diagnostic entity in modern psychiatry. They are the subject of numerous studies and clinical investigations that examine the impact of certain behaviors on the brain’s reward system and on the development of a specific clinical picture of addiction. The phenomenon of behavioral addiction is recognized in current diagnostic classifications, which identify two forms of behavior within the category of addictions: gambling disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and gambling addiction alongside gaming disorder in the International Classification of Diseases. Both forms of behavioral addiction also exhibit specific characteristics regarding gender distribution, being more prevalent among younger men and adolescents, as is the case with addictions to psychoactive substances, and display particularities in terms of clinical course, development of comorbid psychiatric disorders, and the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions.
