Folk Traditions, Oral Heritage, Local Memories and Legends About Roman Amphitheaters and Gladiatorial Games Along the East Adriatic Coast

Folk traditions, oral heritage, local memories and legends can serve as important indicators of the existence of certain archaeological sites in a given area. Although the local population of a region may not be able to define an archaeological phenomenon with complete precision, it is important to emphasize that their stories preserve a certain survival of historical reality
which, thanks to these tales and legends, has been transmitted through the years and thus saved from oblivion. Precisely because these stories have been passed down from generation to generation, the original version and the form preserved today often differ significantly due to various influences (embellishment of stories, insertion of personal elements, vivid imagination). Therefore, they do not always fully correspond to historical reality. In studying the presence of gladiatorial games and amphitheatres in the territory of present-day Croatia, certain phenomena have been recorded that can be linked to oral tradition and local memory. Through interdisciplinary efforts (history, archaeology, church history, archival materials, ethnology, literature, toponymy), this text presents an overview of Roman amphitheaters identified based on preserved oral traditions and local memories.
