Abstract

In Croatian scientific and professional literature, the adjectives proteomski (proteome/proteomic) and proteomički (proteomic) are often incorrectly used as synonyms. Although both adjectives relate to the field of protein research, they are derived from different word stems and cover distinct semantic fields. This paper aims to demonstrate how to clearly differentiate between them based on their etymology and meaning. The study analyses the conceptual content of terms containing these adjectives, their derivational origin, and provides a contrastive analysis of English terms and their Croatian translation equivalents. The
adjective proteomski is derived from the noun proteome and refers to the biological system (e.g., proteome profile), whereas the adjective proteomički is derived from the noun proteomics and refers to the scientific discipline (e.g., proteomic method). Establishing this distinction – which also exists in the original English – ensures precision in scientific communication and prevents terminological inconsistency.
