Sažetak

During work on the roof of the Church of St. Mary at Glavotok, the remains of a pipe organ purchased in 1691 and another organ built in the 18th century were found in the church’s attic. Thanks to a translation of a document dated 1691, it was possible to at least approximately ascertain a piece of the past of the instrument from the 17th century. An examination of the remains of the organ purchased in 1691 was conducted from 14 to 17 June 2018. On that occasion, a series of interesting construction details were noted that merited the attention of pipe organ experts as well as action by the agency in charge of cultural heritage protection. Following a thorough analysis of the preserved pieces, it will be possible to evaluate the discovered artefact with greater certainty within the framework of the rather modest number of preserved pipe organs in Croatia dating to the 16th and 17th centuries. For now, it may be stated that these remains are part of the oldest pipe organ on the island of Krk and among the oldest in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and the Republic of Croatia as a whole. These facts served as a sufficient impetus to draft a study that proposes the restoration of the existing pieces of the organ as well as the reconstruction of those parts that are missing. The study was submitted to the monastery at Glavotok and the relevant Conservation Department in Rijeka. On that basis, a tender may be conducted to select a pipe organ workshop which, in collaboration with experts, would carry forward the planned restoration/reconstruction works. The final and desired result is the installation of the restored instrument in the church for which it had originally been purchased.
