Sažetak

This paper presents a survey of toponomastic methodology and typology used in
field research on the Cres–Lošinj archipelago in the Adriatic Sea. The research process
can be divided in four units: The first unit encompasses the study of written historical, linguistic, cartographic, and archival materials. In this step, the theoretical and
historical framework of the research is established. The second, and methodologically
most significant, unit is the fieldwork, which places the researcher in direct contact
with the informants — the key bearers and transmitters of toponymic heritage. To ensure the most reliable data collection, the Real-Time Cognitive Mapping method has
been suggested as toponymic approach. This method considers navigation processes
that originally constituted toponyms, and by means of which they are transferred as
elements of mental configurations of space or surveys. The third stage involves the
transcription of audio recordings, their linguistic and etymological analysis, and the
systematization of the collected toponyms. In this phase, a unique corpus of toponyms
is formed and categorized according to the motivational basis of name formations. This
step is accompanied by the compilation of an alphabetical index. The fourth unit comprises cartographic processing. The toponyms are entered into a specialized digital map
created using the Croatian Base Map (HOK) and the QGIS program. QGIS is used to
create a spatially referenced database that enables quantitative analyses of toponyms.
