Sažetak
The paper presents and interprets contemporary field notes of rituals,
customs, and beliefs related to the Christmas period. Invaluable ethnographic
data about Christmas customs in Duvno can be found in texts
written by authors such as Stojan Rubić, Anđelo Nuić, Ivo Bagarić, Klement
Galić, Anamarija Mamić, Ivana Krstanović, Mirjana Kukavica,
Ante Matić-Mijušić, Ante Matić-Borčanac, Ante Matić-Lib and Vinko
Vukadin. Furthermore, authors such as Petar Miloš, Željko Musić, Iva
Bagarić have highlighted glimpses of the festive atmosphere and the influence
of migration on Christmas customs in their literary works. These
texts collectively point to a rich yet insufficiently researched culture of
Christmas customs in the Duvno region, highlighting the need for more
systematic research. In response to this, field research was conducted
between August 2023 and December 2024, with the aim of documenting
and interpreting contemporary practices and oral traditions related to
the Christmas period. Christmas holidays are associated with apotropaic
and panspermic traditions, as well as divinatory practices. Under the
influence of religious, political, and social factors, Christmas customs
developed and over time underwent numerous changes in their performance.
A large number of recorded customs are no longer practiced and
are preserved mainly in the memories of individuals. This further emphasizes
the need for systematic documentation of these cultural elements to
prevent their irretrievable loss.
