Sažetak

Krleža’s drama In Agony was staged in Poland only twice. The first time was on the
stage of the Small Scene of the Polish Theatre in Warsaw in 1933, following the famous
romance between Krleža and the well-known Polish writer Zofia Nałkowska, who adapted
for the Polish theatre the translation of the drama made by Wiktor Bazielich. The second
time was in the largest possible theatre, on the stage of the cult-status Television Theatre
in Poland in 1981. This paper presents the latter production, the less frequently described
and commented-on. The most significant role in the Polish television theatre translation
of Agony was played by Lech Wojciechowski — the author of the adaptation and translation,
as well as its first director — who unfortunately did not live to see the premiere of
his interpretation of Krleža due to his premature death. In his version, of the three main
characters of the drama (Laura, Lenbach, and Križovec), Lenbach comes to the forefront.
Wojciechowski introduces changes to the television drama that on the one hand work in
favor of Lenbach’s character, on the other hand they are detrimental to the characters of
Laura and Križovec. Agony also resonated strongly with the historical moment in which it
was broadcast, at the height of the Polish society’s uprising, which was suppressed on 13
December 1981 with the introduction of martial law. The production contains very strong
anti-Russian accents and inevitably corresponds with a certain agony of communism and
the political upheaval in Poland.
