Sažetak

The focus of this paper is the analysis of the translation poetics of Dubrovnik-born poet and translator Vojo Šindolić, whose oeuvre of more than seventy volumes of translations of contemporary American, Japanese, and Chinese literature is among the most extensive in Croatian culture. Despite this, his work as a translator has not yet been systematically examined within the framework of translation theory. The basis of this research is the question of how translation, poetic translation particularly, functions as a space of dialogue between author and translator, and how the poetic and translational voices intertwine in Šindolić`s work. The theoretical section of the paper considers normative and descriptive models of translation (Nida, Newmark, Toury, Lefevere, Popovič), followed by approaches that de ne translation as an interpretative act (Benjamin, Berman, Venuti, Eco). The analysis has shown that Šindolić`s work is best understood within the latter, interpretative framework. This involves understanding translation as an encounter with the author and an act of cultural mediation. His translational choices, from his critique of existing translations of Bukowski, through extensive annotations to Pound and Ferlinghetti, to the transposed meanings in Dylan’s lyrics, testify to an ethical and aesthetic responsibility that goes beyond literalness. Special attention is given to dedications and letters by the Beat authors to Šindolić, which can be read as paratextual traces of his visibility and recognition in the international literary context. Ultimately, Šindolić`s translational oeuvre represents an authentic creative contribution. His translations reveal a refined sense for rhythm, language, and cultural context, in line with Berman`s trial of the foreign and Eco`s concept of saying almost the same thing. The dedications and manuscripts of the Beat authors, as well as poems dedicated specifically to Šindolić, attest to his status as cultural mediator and interlocutor
