Sažetak
In the context of the history of research into antiquity in Rijeka, the “long” 18th century was marked by scholars’ interest in literary sources: Naturalis Historia by Pliny the Elder, Roman History by Appian of Alexandria, as well as in the visible material remains of Roman heritage—such as the Roman arch located in the very center of the city, the defensive walls on the city’s elevation Kalvarija and on Mount St. Katarina (Claustra Alpium Iuliarum), and Roman inscriptions discovered in the Rijeka area, embedded in the walls of local churches. Individuals such as Rijeka patrician Claudio de Marburg and Rijeka canons Ivan A. Benzoni and Toma de Peri provided the first interpretations of these monuments in the 18th century, linking them to well-known historical events, such as the siege of the Dalmatian city of Promona during the time of Caesar and Octavian, or the war of Claudius Gothicus against the Alemanni. Thanks to these efforts, in the second half of the 18th century, the previously held and now definitively abandoned theory that Rijeka was once the Roman Promona gradually began to be rejected, in favour of identifying it with Tarsatica. Interest in Rijeka’s ancient heritage grew among a broader public, which by the early 19th century led to the creation of the first private collections of Roman monuments, and to professional and scholarly research. This paper revises current knowledge about the contributions of 17th and 18th century historiographers to the understanding and interpretation of Roman monuments and Rijeka’s ancient heritage, in light of recent insights into the city’s history and its historiography.
