Lesser Known and Unknown Facts about Kašić’s Translation of the Holy Scriptures

Abstract
Among the lesser-known facts that should be widely acknowledged, is the fact that Bartol Kašić produced two separate translations of the Holy Scriptures. Initially, he had translated only the New Testament and invested considerable effort in its publication. It is possible that this manuscript had been lost during Kašić’s lifetime, promptinghim to begin translating again, this time the entire Holy Scriptures. Of the preserved manuscripts of this translation, the only edition available to date was prepared and published in Germany in 1999. The manuscripts are not kept in Rome, as it is sometimes assumed, but rather in Zagreb, Zadar, and Odessa. While his work has been the subject of scholarly research, it has failed to reach the scholarly community sufficiently. Many other questions remain to be investigated: detailed descriptions of the translation language and the translation procedures used, compilation of a comprehensive dictionary, an accentuation description, and a study of the marginal notes, which are very specific to Kašić’s translation of the Bible.
