WHAT KIND OF DIALECTAL TEXTS DO WE NEED WHEN TEACHING THE CROATIAN LANGUAGE

Sažetak

The author presents the principles that should be observed when teaching language if the teaching process is based on differential grammar between the Croatian standard language and some parts of the Kajkavian dialect, one of the three Croatian dialects (besides Štokavian and Čakavian). Literary and artistic texts are not appropriate for the initial levels of teaching since the number of such texts consistently containing elements of local speech is irrelevant. Most dialect writers avoid this for fear of poor reception of their works.
That is why for language teaching texts based on differential grammar should be constructed in which the local vernacular is consistently used. The authors of such texts should be aware of the Kajkavian dialect really used today, since a text containing archaic dialectal features would not be accepted by students. The vocabulary of such texts should also avoid archaisms and contain words which, when converted into standard words, require only simple phonological and morphological adaptation. Before creating such texts a list of language features from the particular local vernacular to be covered should be made: from the general features which are characteristic for most Kajkavian dialects to those which are specifi c for a targeted local speech. All these characteristics should be illustrated by sentences with their translation into the standard language.
The main criterion in the sequence of presenting features of local speech should be the frequency of a language form in speech.
Since the vocalism of Kajkavian local speeches signifi cantly differs from the vocalism of the Croatian standard language, it should be insisted on the emphasis on the graphic representation of the variety of related vowels from local speeches (there are fi ve different e-vowels in Kajkavian, whereas there is only one e in the Croatian standard language). Students will pronounce these sounds spontaneously when reading Kajkavian texts.
Diachronic comparisons with the Old Church Slavic language should be avoided and explanations which are adapted for students should be chosen instead, without fear of them being „not scientifi c“.
Students should become acquainted with the feature of doublets, i.e using one form instead of another completely arbitrarily. This is particularly important when teaching the infl exion of nouns in local speeches, since there are a number of possible endings for the same case.
