Motivation in learning Croatian Sign Language (HZJ)

Abstract
Sixty-nine Speech-Language Pathology students at the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences and 129 Croatian Sign Language (HZJ) course participants at the Croatian Association of Deaf-blind Persons “Dodir” and the Association “Theater, Visual Arts and Deaf Culture – Dlan” in Zagreb were surveyed using the Questionnaire of Motivation for HZJ Learning, designed specifically for this research. The questionnaire consists of 16 items accompanied by a standard 5-point Likert scale. Factor analysis of the questionnaire demonstrated that the questionnaire measured three types of motivation for HZJ learning: instrumental, integrative and affective. One-way analysis of variance indicated that three groups of participants - students who attended an HZJ course as a mandatory subject, students who attended an HZJ course as an elective course, and HZJ course participants in associations - differ significantly in their HZJ learning motivation. Significantly higher levels of integrative and affective motivation were found among HZJ course participants, while their instrumental motivation proved to be lower than that among students. Both groups of students were found to have similar levels of integrative and affective HZJ learning motivation, while instrumental motivation proved to be significantly higher in students who take HZJ as a mandatory course. Affective motivation received the lowest score in both groups of students. Possible explanations for these results, as well as their implications for HZJ teaching, are considered.
