Abstract

The aim of this essay is to discuss the ways of designing several "female" characters from contemporary fiction by Tanja Mravak (Croatia) and Sylwia Chutnik (Poland). The emphasis is on the (narrative) methods used to select the literary figures differently conceptualised than the traditionally understood category of "female (literary) roles". Although literary figurations of the two narratives are different, there is a common trait in both texts. It consists in a clear intent to destabilise the habitual codex of literary femininity on one hand and, on the other hand, to create some new feminine matrices.

Keywords

female literary characters; gender roles; feminist literary theory
