Abstract
This paper discusses the concepts of “learning society” and “knowledge society” and their use in scientific and political discourse. The economic, political, and cultural aims of education and their relations to social development and quality of life are also considered. Special attention is paid to the problem of the transposition of scientific understandings about lifelong learning into educational policy which strives to contribute to the development of the knowledge
society. The Finnish educational experience in developing a knowledge society is shown, which is instructive for countries which have proclaimed the knowledge society as their social development strategy. Croatia belongs to this circle of countries.
