Abstract

The objective of the paper was to investigate the presentation of the topics on sustainable development in educational programs and the level of its application by educators and teachers in the City of Zagreb. The research, using the survey method, was conducted during the 2017/18 school year within the educational workshops "Let's meet domestic animals" at the Grassland Research Center (University of Zagreb, Faculty of Agriculture). A total of 99 educators and teachers were interviewed. According to the results of the survey, as many as 21% of educational institutions do not have waste storage facilities. Of the surveyed educators and teachers, 56% are of the opinion that not a sufficient number of environmental topics is included in the educational program, 73% believe that children are not environmentally friendly while 59% think that higher prices of organic products are not justified. The majority of surveyed educators and teachers (i) consider themselves environmentally friendly (81%); (ii) use public transport to go to work (60%), (iii) sort out waste in their households (67%), (iv) put old clothes in a container intended for clothes (70%), (v) use eco-bags for shopping (66%), (vi) buy organic products (51%) and (vii) use recycled products (54%). It was concluded that most educators and teachers in everyday life implement the subjects of sustainable development but the education in sustainable development topics through preschool and primary school curriculum should be intensified. In order to transfer environmental awareness for sustainable development to children, it is necessary to ensure the coexistence of children with theoretical and practical principles of sustainable development. By intensifying work in the field of environmental protection for sustainable development in educational institutions, generations of children with positive attitudes towards nature are brought up and thus protect the planet Earth.
