Abstract

In 1970, with their early single Paranoid, Black Sabbath showed the
direction for what would later be known as heavy metal. Deviation from
‘normalcy’ would go on to shape not only a musical genre, but also an
entire counterculture. In its half century of existence, metal has undergone
many mutations, yet still remains provocative, extreme and always on the
margins, often crossing the boundaries of good taste. It has become the
ugly mirror image reflecting all the shortcomings of modern society – wars,
disease, hypocrisy, greed, the destruction of nature… Although the escapist
element in heavy metal should not be ignored, this work, by searching for
the foundations of its identity, will focus on its social and political element,
in order to assess how much its very existence has managed to change the
lives of its listeners.
