Abstract

The article analyzes the popular South Korean tv show Squid game claiming, among others, that the viewership is being 'sucked in' into similar narratives through subconscious mechanisms (irrational but understandable) such as the one of longing for the return to the disciplinary phase as well as for the reinstatement of the master / slave relationship. This thesis is developed bearing in mind the ideas of the South Korean philosopher Byung-Chul Han and Foucault's notions of surveillance, discipline and punishment. The motto and the raison d'être od the game in the show is, basically, Get rich or die trying! This hypercapitalistic catchphrase has been reduced to child's play and gradually recuperates its literal meaning. The players who make the wrong move are executed right away as the game continues, as well as the show.
