Abstract
Even after the end of the Cold War the protection of national minorities remains one of the key issues of the European security. Although the end of the bipolar division of world at the beginning of the last decade has had initiated expectations of the significant developments in the field of the protection of ethnic minorities, developments showed negative trends - not only that the issue of the protection of ethnic minorities was used in internal conflicts, but minority issue was also used in in interstate conflicts. Additionally, in developed democracies of the Western Europe attitude towards particular ethnic minorities, such as Roma and Muslim minority, demonstrates that the issue of protection of ethnic minorities in those states hasn't been completely regulated. Those examples reveal that the protection of ethnic minorities still remains on of the key issues of the European security.
