Terminology for Romance Varieties on the Eastern Adriatic Coast

Abstract
Many contemporary studies focus on Romance language influences on Croatian dialects along the eastern Adriatic coast. Furthermore, the living Romance languages are analysed from a sociolinguistic perspective. This primarily refers to the pre-Venetian and Venetian language layers, though many studies also address the Istro-Romanian language. This paper aims to systematically clarify the distinction between the two aforementioned Italo-Romance layers (pre-Venetian and Venetian dialects) and to present one Eastern Romance variety – namely, Istro-Romanian. The objective of this study is to provide future researchers in the fields of Croatian dialectology and Romance–Slavic contact linguistics, as well as scholars from other academic disciplines, with a concise and accessible overview of the topic, including a set of denominations for the Romance linguistic varieties along the eastern Adriatic coast. Given that some of the key terms found in existing literature appear in varying forms, an attempt will also be made to standardise the relevant terminology in Croatian, Italian, and English.
