Abstract
This paper analyzes the units of the basic lexical inventory used to express gender in Turkish and Croatian taking into account the typological, genetic, and cultural differences between the two languages. Particular focus is placed on similarities and differences in linguistic asymmetries as reflections of the androcentric orientation present in both cultures. Considering the typological characteristics of the two languages, these similarities and differences are examined through: (1) an analysis of lexemes used to denote male and female referents in both languages, and (2) an analysis of how these lexemes are recorded and defined in monolingual dictionaries. The results indicate significant differences between the two languages with regard to the lexical differentiation of certain concepts, the degree of diversity in the lexical inventory for denoting gender, and the extent to which stereotypes and conventionalized representations are reflected in dictionary definitions and usage examples.
