Abstract
This paper introduces the idea of the Digital Product Passport (further referred to as DPP) and its development and implementation, with a particular emphasis on the European Union market. The concept of the DPP is explored within the broader context of evolving international environmental agreements, sustainability goals, and the collective achievements in environmental protection over recent decades. By analyzing these frameworks, the paper offers insight into how the DPP aligns with global efforts to create a more transparent, circular, and sustainable economy.
Furthermore, this paper puts a special focus on the textile industry, its development, and its impact on the environment. The textile industry is examined in detail due to its development, rapid growth, complex production system, and environmental footprint. This analysis discusses how the introduction of the DPP could bring transformative changes in how textiles are produced, used, and disposed of within the European Union and beyond.
Moreover, this paper explains one of the biggest problems society faces due to excessive waste and its consequences, alongside “fast fashion” as the primary cause of huge amounts of waste on the planet. Finally, the paper deals with the legal act introducing the Digital Product Passport, i.e., the Ecodesign for Sustainable Product Regulation. This paper contains a deeper view of the CIRPASS, the project that laid the foundation for the establishment of the Digital Product Passport. The final section of the paper examines the positive outcomes of this initiative, the modality of application in real life, and the method of implementation.
