Sažetak
The relationship between tradition and modernity is one of the permanent attributes of visual identity in the ancient and modern history of Dubrovnik. This article is an attempt to highlight the real nature of this relationship on the basis of analysis and valorisation of some of the most important modern architectural works in Dubrovnik from the first half of the twentieth century. The Mediterranean and historic context of the city’s artistic legacy and the traditional architecture of its country villas have contributed to the design of modern architecture in Dubrovnik, this new modernity being proclaimed in new, modern spatial dispositions that are related to historic architecture, along with the associative application of historical motifs. Individual residential architecture in the form of modern villas are the most representative examples of modern architecture in Dubrovnik, and certainly the only type which best conveys the ideas of International Style. These modern buildings evidence sensible design with respect to the historic and landscape environment that is achieved and enhanced with the use of traditional, historic building materials (stone, wood) and open spaces. Most villas are the work of young architects (Joža Plečnik, Drago Galić, Lavoslav Horvat and Harold Bilinić, Nikola Dobrović) who, leaning on the traditional architecture of the country villas, introduced new ideas and architectural qualities into these residential spaces. Investors should be sought among the well-off members of the upper middle-class, thanks to whom some of the most representative examples of modern individual residential architecture in Dubrovnik have been built: villas Verčon and Jakšić in Lapad, villa Banac at the Ploče suburb, villa Vesna on the Island of Lopud, villa Svid in Zaton, etc. Thus the continuity of spatial and architectural tradition is not in the imitation of tradition but in its interpretation as the promoter of creative thinking and design best epitomised by these modern villas.
