HEAVY METALS INTERRACTION WITH SELENIUM IN ANIMAL ORGANISM

Sažetak
Heavy metals are natural constituents of the earth’s crust, but indiscriminate human activities have drastically altered their geochemical cycles and biochemical balance in humans and animals. Any metal (or metalloid) may be considered a “contaminant” if it occurs in a form or concentration that has a detrimental human or environmental effect. Elements such as cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) circulate in nature in different oxidation states. In high amounts they can be harmful. Toxic effects depend on the dose and different oxidation states. Main characteristics are the ability to accumulate in the body, the limited ability of detoxification, slow excretion from the organism and toxic effects on the lungs, kid¬neys and digestive system. Selenium, as a trace element, takes a special place in the body and has significant roles. One of them is antagonistic effect on the heavy metals such as Hg, Cd and Pb. Intake of chemical compounds is a dynamic and complex process. A surplus of selenium can lead to acute or chronic selenosis. Acute selenosis occurs with an intake of high levels of selenium in a short time in¬terval. Chronic selenosis occurs when with the intake of foods containing more than 5 and less than 40 mg of selenium per kg in a longer period. Meal containing 0.1 to 0.3 mg/kg selenium provides an adequate amount of selenium, which is important for the animals. Addition of 0.1 mg/kg of selenium is required for animals that live in conditions without pollution, and addition of 0.3 mg/kg of selenium is required when there are different antagonists such as pesticides, toxins, histamine.
