Sažetak

The aim of this work is to analyze the bioecological, silvicultural, horticultural and nutritional characteristics of myrtle (Myrtus communis L.). Myrtle is the evergreen and heliophilous species that grows as an shrub (4-5 m) with aromatic leaves and flowers. In our flora, apart from the subspecies (ssp. communis), there is also an extremely rare small-leaved myrtle ssp. Tarentina (L.) Nyman. Myrtle is a forest fruit tree, as well as a decorative and honeybearing species in north costal mediterranean area. In addition to the mentioned myrtle, it is also a medicinal plant and is used in folk and official medicine. It is connected with the culture od matice mediteran pupile and is also used in gastronomy. Martinovic brandy is made from myrtle fruits on the island of Hvar. Tree od myrta regenerates very well on burned area. The importance of these autochthonous specie is in the preservation of biological diversity and ecological stability of forest vegetation, which is why they should have more valorized in agroforestry, horticulture and karst melioration.
