Soybean seed sector in the Republic of Croatia in the period 2015-2024

Abstract

The recognition of new varieties of soybeans is carried out at the Centre for Seed and Nursery Production, Croatian Agency for Agriculture and Food as the national authorized body for the implementation of all activities in the field of seed and seedlings. The recognition itself is carried out on the basis of a two-year DUS test and economic value. After the recognition procedure, the variety is entered on the Varietal List, after which seed production begins, which is the crown of breeding work. Soybean seed production in the Republic of Croatia in the average year 2015 - 2024 takes place on 5,629.88 ha. After the recognition of the seed crop, the procedure for issuing certificates with which soybeans can be placed on the market begins. On average from 2014/2015 to 2023/2024, 9,577,108 kg of soybean seeds were certified. The soybean seed certificate in the Republic of Croatia is extremely important because, in addition to guaranteeing the farmers the desired varietal and quality of the seed, the certificate guarantees that it is non-genetically modified soybean (GMO-free).
