Sažetak
In comparison with other African countries in the observed time-period, Yugoslavia had the widest spectrum of economic relations with Egypt. The research of this issue is relevant mostly due to the timeframe, i.e. the events that marked it, that is the Six-Day War. In June 1967, armed conflict between the joint forces of Egypt, Jordan and Syria and Sudanese and Palestinian guerilla and Israel on the other side broke out. Egypt suffered a catastrophic defeat in this war, ultimately resulting in the loss of territory, the instability of the political system and a significant decrease in economic activity. In the same period, Yugoslavia, for
the first time since introducing worker’s self-governing in 1950, started facing great economic problems. The result was a significant decline in industrial productivity and employment. The latter has resulted in a substantial rate of emigration of the working population, which has, by and large, consisted of young and qualified workers. An increase was recorded in the number of Yugoslav enterprises that operated at a loss. Some business-working organizations had those problems not because of their inefficiency, but because of different business circumstances, or deficiencies in the economic-political system. Solutions utilised
by many of these businesses were primarily oriented towards non-purposeful consumption of assets meant for crediting investments and exports for loss mitigation; all this with the goal of preserving the rate of employment and securing the competitive position on the market. These economic movements were an indicator of the inability of adjusting the Yugoslav economy to the market rules of business, which were institutionalised with the 1965 economic reform, which has lastly determined the large differentiation between those who used the transformation towards a more efficient model of business and found a way towards a more successful development, and those who expected the solutions to economic problems in the decrees issued by federal and republic bodies of management. The aim of this paper, based on unpublished archival materials, and relevant political and historiographical bibliography, is to present the economic relations between Yugoslavia and Egypt
in the time period when both countries faced great external as well as internal challenges.
